A trip up the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline is not to be missed. This site features a paved, 2-mile roadway that heads to the historic Makapuu lighthouse. Come at the right time of year -- January to March is best -- and you might just be treated to the sight of migrating whales. Dogs are welcome to accompany you on the trail. Just keep your pooch on a leash no more than six feet in length, and clean up after him in a timely manner. The elevation is steep and the weather can be warm, so bring plenty of drinking water for you both.
