Positives: Free breakfast at the hotel was a big plus. Also, 2 or 3 nights a week they offer free food and drinks at night between 6 PM and 7:30 PM. The staff is mostly friendly, although there was an occasional person that was not the most amicable.
Negatives: The hotel indicates there is a free shuttle service for a radius of 8 miles that will take you anywhere and pick you up. We decided to use this service on one night to avoid having to find parking in the center, etc. I met with one of the receptionists at the front desk and told her where we were planning on going and the time. She took all the information down, along my name, and room number. She indicated the shuttle would leave at 2 PM for this. When the time came, we all went down a few minutes early before 2 PM and waited for the shuttle. After about 10 minutes or so with no shuttle in sight, I asked the woman at the desk, who was the same woman that set up the appointment, and asked about the shuttle. She told me she was trying to locate where he was. After another 5 or 10 minutes, another woman from the hotel comes over and tells me that the shuttle is a courtesy only and there is no guarantee. When I asked about the shuttle that was supposed to pick is up, she indicated it would not be there any time soon. At this point, we had to scramble and rush down to the center using our own vehicle and search for parking, cutting the time of our appointment really close. We had booked a boat cruise, and if we were late, we would have lost all our money. This left a real bad feeling with me, because I had a conversation with one of the drivers previously, and the woman at the front desk to arrange the appointment. When the time came however, the hotel didn't deliver and didn't even notify us ahead of time so we could have left earlier on our own and not cut the timing so short. Additionally, I had rented a 2 bedroom suite with a full kitchen. The cost was not cheap. In the living room area, there were stains on the carpet and some of the edges were frayed. Some of the areas in each room looked like they hadn't been cleaned thoroughly in a while because there was dust in the corners, etc. The maid service was not stellar. They often did not leave things like toilet paper, tissues, and soap. Why should you have to call down to get items like these that are supposed to be provided when the maid comes and cleans the room.
Overall, this hotel is a good place to stay. There are pros and cons just like anywhere else. The location is a couple of miles away from Portsmouth center, but the parking is free and plentiful at this location. There are grocery stores, shopping, and restaurants all close by.
