The location is in the heart of Harlem. My family/friends decided to stay in Harlem as a 2nd trip to NY. We were entrenched in the culture of Harlem, sights, sounds, smells, people, food, activities.
Negatives:
The hotel staff - front desk - were not "friendly". They didn't show any sense of excitement seeing visitors who CHOSE them.

Lovely hotel with very friendly staff. Excellent comfort and value for New York City accommodations.

Practical location in the heart of a cool neibourhood, walking distance to Columbia University, close to metro. Modern feel. I did feel safe. Efficient AC.
Negatives:
The property interiors are getting tired. AC has two modes of operation, "alpine blizzard" and "desert storm". The gym was very tired with several dysfunctional machines.

On the first fay, the toilets slide door was derailed at the bottom and could not be opened because it was jammed by the sink table. I almost got locked in the toilet. But somehow I got out and I lifted the door back on to the rail myself. No problem after that.
