When checking in they explained a nonrefundable $40 fee would be applied to my card that had to be spent in the hotel.
I was only in town for one night and changed our Mother's Day plans so we wouldn’t lose the money. The bistro menu was limited but adequate. We all felt manipulated at dinner.
In our minds, the unique ambiance of this hotel is a thing of the past.

The history of course. I found the atmosphere to be very warm and cosy.
Negatives:
Would have liked to have seen a coffee machine in the room as there is no room service. I left early morning and no coffee was available in the lobby as the macine was broken and the urn would not be filled until after I left.
Unfortunately when I got home I noticed on the hotel invoice that I was charged for two nights rather than the one night I stayed. A clerical error I’m sure but still it’s rather inconvenient having to follow up on such a matter.

I spent many afternoons having a cocktail at the Algonquin since the late 60’s. Nothing has changed which makes it an excellent stay.

Positives:
Breakfast was very good, but choices were limited. Location is convenient to both Grand Central Station and Times Square. We liked having both a good restaurant and a bar in the hotel. Hamlet, the cat, was an added attraction.

I love the period details of this property, and the staff were AMAZING! (Especially Otto, from the restaurant, and all of the doormen, whose names escape me- they were all A++ incredible!!)
The rooms are clean & comfortable, the restaurant is spectacular. Everything was wonderful, can’t say it enough!

We had a small issue with the heating/cooling in our room, but they were extremely prompt in trying to fix it, and when it couldn’t be remedied, they moved our room immediately and credited us accordingly. I honestly can’t complain!
