Positives: Room was spacious and clean. Lobby had nice live music and free beverages at various points throughout the day (e.g. coffee, wine).
Negatives: Light switches in the room were very difficult to control, look 30-60 seconds each night to turn off the various lights. Also had an issue at check in where staff was demanding a $500 deposit that wasn't listed anywhere on Booking.com, on The James Hotel's website, or at a posted sign or registration form at the check-in desk (as required by NY state law). It was easier for me to leave a cash deposit on short notice as I hadn't paid my credit card yet for the month and staff did not accept cryptocurrency, so I did that after much deliberation. At check out, I had the same member of staff, who initially was very polite. When she clocked that it was me (or saw a note in the system), her voice immediately rose and she shouted "DID YOU TAKE ANYTHING FROM THE MINIBAR ?" (I did not.) The manager (same as check in) then materialised and asked me to sign a form saying that I received my deposit back. I said I would be happy to sign a form, but pointed out that I never got an acknowledgement at check in that I left a cash deposit (for example, if a different staff member facilitated my check out, they might not have known and it may have caused issued getting my cash back). The manager then says to the other staff member "we can just tell the manager that he refused to sign," at which point I said I was happy to sign, I just didn't understand the process. The manager then said "sir, please work with us, we are cashless and you made me take cash, and we did it as a courtesy (I didn't realise that accepting cash in the US was a courtesy, in fact, it's required by law) and you need to just work with us !" A complaint has been filed with the NYDCA relating to the lack of mention of security deposit in advance of booking.
